Do I Need to Season My Nonstick Frying Pan Before Use It

Have you ever wondered why chefs season their frying pans? The answers are right here!

Seasoning your frying pan or any pan does not improve or add taste to the dish. You see, seasoning might sound as if you are giving the pan a particular flavor, but we do this for a different purpose. The name might be seasoning, yet we are doing this to prevent the pits and pores from affecting our cooking.

If you take a look, when you use a specific pan for a while, pits and pores start to appear. Now, to ensure that this does not affect your cooking, we season the pan. In this way, we also certify that the seasoning is leveled as well as confirm searing.

Another thing that searing does is that it improves the overall longevity of the pans. Seasoning prevents food from sticking to the pans. If you have a nonstick pan when food gets stuck, removing that could damage the pans.

Even if it is conventional pans, seasoning prevents the sticking of food, which means that you do not have to forcefully remove them. Hence, the chances of any damage caused to the pans are minimum and improve the life of the product.

How to Season a Nonstick Pan

Here you will find a step-by-step guide on how to do the task very easily;

Step 1: Cleaning the Pan

The very first step of seasoning is making sure that no impurity is on your non stick pan. There are times that dirt and other things come are carried by your pan when you are washing it. You must remove it. Now, to do this, you have to clean the pan using dish soap and warm water.

Step 2: Drying

Once you are satisfied with the cleaning, you have to ensure that the pan is dry before you can do anything else on it. In order to do that, you need to towel dry or use clean paper to dry it. You need to confirm that it is thoroughly dried.

Step 3: The Seasoning

Now that you have done everything, it is time that we season the pan. Take a teaspoon of canola or peanut oil. Then, rub that onto your pan. Make sure that you have covered every inch of the pan.

Step 4: Making the Seasoning Permanent

When you are satisfied with the previous step, it is time that you ensure that the seasoning stays on for a long time. Therefore, to do that, place the pan onto the stove, turn it on, and leave it there for thirty to sixty seconds.

After that, remove the pan from the stove. Then leave it cool!

Step 5: Wipe off the Excess

Your pan is fully seasoned now! However, there is a good chance that excess of the oil is going to be left behind. To get rid of that, take a paper towel and wipe it off. Viola! Your seasoned nonstick pan is ready.

Seasoning Nonstick Pans in Oven

If you want, you can season your pans in an oven. The first step is the same for this as well. After that, you need to follow these steps:

Step 1: Preheating the Oven

When using ovens for seasoning, you shall heat it to approximately 300°F to 350°F. Do this for a couple of minutes!

Step 2: Applying the Seasoning

This step is pretty much the same for when you are seasoning using stoves. Take a teaspoon of canola oil or peanut oil. Spread it onto the pan (up to the rim; same for when you use stoves) using a paper towel.

Step 3: Making Sure that the Seasoning is Permanent

Once you are happy with the spread, place the pan into the oven for around an hour. After that, take it out and let it cool!

Step 4: Wipe Off the Excess

After you are done with everything, you need to ensure that you have wiped the excess oil from the pan. You can do that by taking a paper towel and rubbing the pan.

Can I Season Non-stick Pan with Olive Oil

It is not a wise decision to use olive oil to season your new nonstick frying pan. Yes, some manufacturers do approve of it, but we suggest that you avoid using it. You see, canola or peanut oil has a much higher smoking point, which means that it can withstand extreme temperatures without cracking or being damaged.

On the other hand, olive oil lacks such a smoking point (it is much lesser than the two), which is why we suggest that you avoid using it.

Don’t Clean the Pan When the Pan’s Hot

Avoid Detergents and Cleaners

Never use extreme detergents, cleaners, or metal scrubs for cleaning your nonstick pans. The metal scrubs will damage the nonstick layer, and the chemicals from the detergents or cleaners might make the nonstick feature ineffective.

Use Water for Cleaning

If food is badly stuck, you can fill the pan up with water and bring it up to boiling temperatures. The stuck food will automatically loosen up and allow you to clean the pan with ease. This technique is called deglazing.

Move Away From Dishwashers Completely

Do not use dishwashers! Some manufactures claim that it is fine to use it. However, we suggest that you abstain from that. Dishwashers have powerful detergents as well as operate at high temperatures, which could be harmful to the pans.
